The BFG is a Must-See + Free Printable Coloring Pages
I bet most of you are familiar with Roald Dahl, the beloved children’s author responsible for amazing stories like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, and James and the Giant Peach. Many of his books have become wonderful and successful movies, and with the release of the film The BFG, you can add another to that list!
The BFG is a brand new fantasy adventure film based on Dahl’s story, produced by Walt Disney Pictures and directed by Steven Spielberg. So, yeah, you know it’s going to be good!
The story is about a young orphan girl named Sophie who befriends an aging giant and begins an adventure to help him capture other giants who have invaded the human world. The BFG (or Big Friendly Giant) is not like most giants; his brothers are twice his size and scarier to boot. Like most of the scarier giants, his brothers enjoy eating humans, but the sweet BFG is a vegetarian. Sophie soon learns that the BFG is gentle and kind, and he takes her to Dream Country to teach her about magic and dreams, and together they come up with a plan to make the human world safe again.
The kids and I attended an early screening of The BFG, and let me tell you: I loved absolutely everything about this movie. It was perfect and I can’t say enough good things about it. I’m usually very picky about actors and move casting, but The BFG is flawless in that department. I’m also pretty picky about movies based on books (we all know the book is usually better), but this is such an amazing representation of The BFG book. It’s charming, funny, cute, sad, happy, and more. The BFG is as goofy as you remember him from the original story, and he’s perfect on the screen.
The animation and special effects in this movie are also fantastic. The creatures are beautifully done, and unlike some other live-action movies, the animation is not super flashy or over the top. The animation style really reflects on the fact that this is a story- and character-driven movie.
My kids and I both loved The BFG, and we are definitely going to watch it in theaters again. I think I may even be more excited than they are. I really can’t rave about this movie enough!
While we wait for the movie to be released on July 1, the kids can have a little fun with some BFG coloring pages, courtesy of Disney. There are pictures of The BFG himself, some of the scarier giants, and a few other scenes from the movie. I really love that Disney provided these coloring pages; the movie is so visually beautiful, it really inspires creativity on the page. Also, I’m just a big fan of coloring pages in general, because kids can make copies and color the same pages multiple times in multiple ways. I’m certain that you’ll love The BFG too, so I really hope you’ll make plans to see it when it hits theaters on July 1. It will be perfect for a home movie collection, but it’s the kind of beautiful movie you’ll want to see on the big screen. Head over to Fandango to grab your opening day tickets!
