The Angry Birds Movie Review: A Surprisingly Entertaining App-Inspired Film
Whether or not you’re into video game apps for your phone, I’m willing to bet you know about Angry Birds.
Angry Birds has been around for almost seven years now (wow), and it’s still as popular as ever. I personally don’t have time for games, but I make time for Angry Birds. My kids and husband also love to play it, so of course it’s a common topic of conversation around our house. I think Angry Birds may get more use than any other app on our phones.
When I first heard that an Angry Birds movie was in the works, I had my doubts. I really wasn’t sure how a game involving birds being slingshot at pigs’ houses could successfully translate to a movie. But since my kids and I love the game so much, and because we were graciously invited by Sony and Kidz Vuz to screen the movie and visit the Bronx Zoo, we were determined to go.
I’m glad we did! The whole family loved The Angry Birds Movie. It managed to incorporate a lot of elements from the game, and it also had a really entertaining story with great characters. In the movie, an island full of happy, flightless birds are living easy lives…except for poor, grumpy Red. Along the way, Red meets fellow outcasts Chuck and Bomb (in anger management class), and the three of them have to team up when suspicious green pigs show up at the island. I don’t want to spoil the movie, so I’ll stop with this: just like in the game, beware the mean, green piggies!
The movie has a fantastic ensemble cast, including Jason Sudeikis, Maya Rudoloph, and Bill Hader, so the comedy was great. I’ll admit there were a few jokes that I found inappropriate and unnecessary, but overall I was happy and laughing all the way through. It was light and fun, and you even learn a little something by the end. Whether or not you’ve played the game, you’ll have no trouble following and enjoying The Angry Birds Movie!
After the movie, we traveled over to the Bronx Zoo to meet Red from Angry Birds and to watch a super fun bird show. My kids really loved the show, and were excited to see so many new-to-them birds flying around and “performing” for them. I enjoyed it as much as they did!
We had a great day, and I’m so happy we watched the movie. We’ll definitely buy it for our own home collection when it’s available–the kids are already begging for it!
