Sengled Pulse Solo: A Wireless Sound System in an LED Light Bulb
How many of you have husbands or dads who love electronic gadgets? And I don’t just mean little ones like phones and watches; I’m also talking about big ones, like unsightly stereo speakers and all the latest A/V equipment.
Don’t get me wrong: I love gadgets, too, more than I probably should. What I don’t love is how cluttered a house can look when you start bringing gadgets in. They’re supposed to be fun and make my life easier, not take up too much space and create extra dusting surfaces. But since I love them, I find myself making allowances for them.
Imagine my absolute delight when Sengled told me about some of their newest “hidden in plain sight” gadgets, and asked if I wanted to try the new Pulse Solo bulb. My life is changed, guys.
The Pulse Solo by Sengled is an energy efficient LED light bulb. It’s also a top-quality stereo speaker.
This probably sounds a little confusing; I wasn’t really sure how well something like that could work, but believe me – it works, and I love it! The Pulse Solo functions by using the Bluetooth capability of your favorite electronic device (I use it with my iPhone and iPad, and it’s also Android-compatible). Let me break down the key components:
Light: first and foremost, this is a light bulb, and it screws into any light fixture like the light bulbs you already own. It’s equivalent to a 45w bulb, but since it’s LED, it only uses 9.5 watts. Replace your bulb, turn on your light, and bam. Fresh, bright, crisp light. It honestly seems much brighter than the 45w bulbs I’ve used before.
That said, I know that sometimes you don’t want a really bright light, which brings me to one of my favorite features of the Pulse Solo: it’s dimmable! All my life, I’ve been envious of folks with dimmer switches installed in their homes. I know it’s not a huge project, but I’ve never managed to embark upon it. When I learned that my new speaker-bulb had a dimming feature, I was thrilled! The best news is that you do not use it in a fixture with a dimmer switch; it goes in any standard lamp or light fixture, and the dimming feature is controlled via an app on your device. What?! I know, so cool. You can have anywhere from 0-100% light at the flick of a wrist. I’ve been using the bulb at 1% at night as a night light, and it’s perfect. Of course sometimes you want to hear a little music without using the light feature, so you can just turn it all the way down to 0% and have full sound with zero light.
Speaking of speakers: this bulb features two JBL speakers hidden inside. JBL by Harman is well known for their fantastic quality, and the Pulse Solo is no exception. The speakers in this bulb have a rich, full sound! I am always a little suspicious of small speakers, as they can often sound “tinny” and shallow, but these speakers exceeded my expectations by far. I’m using the Pulse Solo in my bedside lamp, but I can crank it up and hear it well in the bathroom while I’m getting ready for the day, several rooms away.
To hear your own music (or podcasts, or tv shows, or anything you want) play through the speakers, all you have to do is turn on the Bluetooth feature of your device, open up your favorite app, and press play. Let me shares some of the ways I use it, bearing in mind that I typically use it in the small lamp on my nightstand (not the larger lamp pictured above):
- This one is a no-brainer: I play music while I’m getting dressed and ready for the day. I can keep the volume low if others are asleep, or turn it up to hear in a different room.
- When I clean, I like to have favorite tv shows playing for background noise, but I have no tv in my bedroom. I just pull up Netflix on my iPad, start my favorite show, and let the sound play from my Pulse Solo.
- For years, I’ve used a “sound machine” to fall asleep. Now that there are apps for that, I’ve been using my iPad as my “machine.” Now I can let the sound of ocean waves or crickets flow through the Pulse speaker while using the bulb at 1% for a tiny bit of light in the room.
Other ideas for this bulb: it’s absolutely perfect for a baby or child’s room, as the amount of light can be easily controlled, and soft, soothing music is built right in. It’s also an amazing choice for Father’s Day, as the Pulse Solo could be an excellent addition to someone’s garage workshop or home office. Honestly, this gadget is perfect for any place you want good sound without big speaker boxes or ugly cords disrupting your décor. This is truly one of my favorite things, and I can’t say enough good things about it. Whether you love gadgets yourself, or need something for Father’s Day (it’s just around the corner), the Pulse Solo is one of my top recommendations!
Pulse Solo is one of many “smart” bulbs by Sengled. They all provide strong LED lighting, but they all feature something a little extra, like my speaker, an HD Camera, a motion detector, or a wi-fi repeater. To check out the full line of Pulse bulbs, just visit Sengled.com. You can purchase the bulbs at their site, and also nationwide at retailers like Best Buy, Lowe’s, Amazon, Home Depot, and more.
