Save Big with Metromile Pay-Per-Mile Car Insurance + Win a $100 Gas Card!
What are your driving habits? I live outside the city center, so I’m totally dependent upon my car, but when I lived in the middle of the city, things were different. I could take public transportation around town, as well as walk or bike to some of my favorite places. As for my car, I used it for longer distances or trips that required cargo space (like a large grocery run).
If that sort of transportation routine sounds familiar to you, or if you simply don’t drive your car often, you might start to cringe when I bring up the topic of car insurance. Wouldn’t it be nice if there were an insurance company that actually took into consideration how many miles you drive?
There is!
Metromile is a pay-per-mile auto insurance, allowing drivers to pay only for the miles they actually drive. It’s designed for customers who drive less than 10,000 miles per year. There is a low base rate each month for full coverage, and then drivers only pay a few cents per mile actually driven. You can get a free, personalized quote at Metromile.com, and prepare to be surprised: Metromile saves the average customer $500 annually!
So how does it work? Metromile provides pay-per-mile insurance with information from the Metromile Pulse, a handy device that plugs into the standard OBII port and easily tracks your mileage. The Pulse also provides an additional benefit for you, as it can provide extra data like driving statistics, engine health, and car location. The Metromile Pulse has even been used to recover stolen cars.
There is also a free Metromile app available for both iOS and Android devices. This app makes every car a smart car, and connects drivers to all kinds of valuable information. Users can get details about their tips and learn about their personal driving trends (including mileage, MPG, time, and speed), fuel level and cost estimates, car location, car diagnostics, and an option to contact a mechanic. One of my favorite features is the street sweeping alert: users in San Francisco, San Diego, Los Angeles, and Chicago will never have to worry about being towed due to forgotten street sweeping days, because the Metromile app will remind you!
Metromile has been offering pay-per-mile car insurance since 2011, and is currently available in 7 states (New Jersey, California, Washington, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Illinois). Their market continues to grow, so you can add your zip code and name to their waiting list to be notified when Metromile comes to your area!
GIVEAWAY!
We’re excited to share this company with you, and also excited to let you know that we’re giving away a $100 gas card and some Metromile swag to a lucky reader! To enter, just visit Metromile.com to obtain your free, personal quote. Again, if you’re in an area outside of the current market, enter your zip code and sign up for the waiting list. Then just pop back here and comment to tell us what you would do with your estimated $500 in annual savings! (Open to US residents. Ends 3/17/16 at 11:59 PM ET.)
$500 would buy a lot of fun things. Whether you like to read, knit, hike, watch movies, or lounge around the house, Metromile lets you pay for insurance while you’re actually driving, not while you’re enjoying your favorite hobby!

This sounds like an awesome insurance for us- as we really drive so little working from home! I signed up for a quote, but there’s a glitch where it won’t let me select a primary driver for each car. I will definitely check back later to see if it’s fixed. I think it will be much less than our current rate.
