Party Games to Play with Friends and Family Over the Holidays
I love so many things about the month of December, but one of my favorite things is the chance to gather with friends and family for parties and games. I was super excited when Breaking Games offered to send along a couple of new options for me to play!
The first game we played was Mixtape: The Song and Scenario Card Game. I have to tell you – I LOVE this game. I have always been a music person, and one of my favorite things to do as a teenager was to create mixtapes. Sometimes I made them for friends, sometimes for boyfriends, sometimes just for myself, but regardless of the recipient, I took them so incredibly seriously (as only an angsty teenager can). When I found out there was a game were you essentially create a mixtape, I was sold on the spot. Mixtape has a simple premise: a scenario card is pulled from the deck, each player chooses and plays a song for that scenario, and then the group votes on which song was the best. The round’s winner gets a point, and the player with the most points at the end gets all the glory.
Easy peasy, and super fun! The scenario cards offer a wide variety of choices – they might be sweet (First kiss with your biggest childhood crush), and they might be silly (You’re about to fight 20 lethal ninjas; what song is playing in the background?). There are also fun cards like Lip Sync (everyone has to lip sync their next selection) or Interpretive Dance (everyone has to choreograph a dance for their song) – it’s honestly one of the silliest games I’ve played, and it combines that lighthearted gameplay with something I’ve always loved. This game is a winter for sure.
The other game we took for a spin was Fake News. If you’ve ever gotten a laugh from satirical news on the internet, you’ll love this game. Essentially, players get a chance to flex their creative muscles and come up with hilarious news headlines using topic cards and image cards. One player will draw the Audience card and will be the judge of everyone else’s work, and the remaining players will pair up topics and pictures to make something that rivals headlines on The Onion. The audience player will give out tokens for the best, which ultimately decides the game winner. It took us a minute to get the hang of this one, but once we got started, we laughed until we cried.
We played these games with the grown-ups and some wine, but the kids can play along, too. Mixtape is rated ages 12 and up with 3+, and Fake News is rated ages 13 and up for 4-8 players.
Either of these games would be a lot of fun to play when you have lots of folks gathered together during the holidays, but they are both great choices for year-round play. I love finding games that don’t take a long time to play and let you get creative and interactive, and these both definitely work for me. No matter what kind of game you like to play, Breaking Games has an option for you. To check out their full selection and snag some games for your next party, visit BreakingGames.com.

Our family likes to try out new games to play when we hold our family game nights. We have these a lot during these cold and snowy winter months here in Illinois.
