Observing SIDS Awareness Month with HALO – Win a SleepSack!
This post is brought to you by HALO.
Did you know that 80-90% of SIDS-related deaths are due to unsafe sleep practices? Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is a concern for every parent, but there are steps you can take to reduce the risk of it happening to your child.
Safe Sleep Practices
Always
- Place baby to sleep on his or her back at naptime and at nighttime.
- Use a crib that meets current safety standards with a firm mattress that fits snugly and is covered with only a tight-fitting crib sheet.
- Remove all soft bedding and toys from your baby’s sleep area (this includes loose blankets, bumpers, pillows, and positioners). The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests using a wearable blanket instead of loose blankets to keep your baby warm.
- Offer a pacifier when putting baby to sleep. If breastfeeding, introduce pacifier after one month or after breastfeeding has been established.
- Breastfeed, if possible, but when finished, put your baby back to sleep in his or her separate safe sleep area alongside your bed.
Never
- Never put your baby to sleep on any soft surface.
- Never dress your baby too warmly for sleep; keep room temperature 68-72 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Never allow anyone to smoke around your baby or take your baby into a room or car where someone has recently smoked.
October is SIDS Awareness Month, and for every new Facebook “like” this month, HALO will donate $1 to SIDS Awareness!
HALO Innovation’s SleepSack® wearable blankets have become the standard for hospital nurseries and parents alike. In fact, 1,000 hospital nurseries use the HALO SleepSack Swaddle instead of blankets through the HALO Safer Way to Sleep Initiative. HALO Innovations also offers free Safe Sleep Practices kits to childbirth educators to help further the cause of SIDS prevention.
We’ve been using HALO SleepSacks since we started our little family, and HALO has helped us to continue the tradition by sending my son a Big Kids SleepSack.
As you can see, he’s thrilled about it! It’s got all the same great features of my daughter’s SleepSack, only it’s made of a heavier micro-fleece to keep my boy warm and cozy during the chilly months ahead. He’s 3 years old right now and a little on the small side, so we got him the 2T/3T size and the SleepSack is still plenty roomy. He’s been running all over the house in his new wearable blanket, and when he finally tires himself out, he’s already prepared for his nap. My son has been known to plop himself down and fall asleep where ever he is when the mood hits him, but if he manages to make it to an actual bed for naptime, I love how the bed doesn’t need to be unmade. He’s already got his blanket on! When his sister is out at dance class, he likes to sneak into her room for his naps. Shhh…don’t tell her that.
At bedtime, we tuck his little feet into the SleepSack so they don’t get too cold. He stays covered and warm all night long because he can’t kick off the blanket. As a result he wakes up less frequently…which means I get more sleep too!
Just like the other SleepSacks, the micro-fleece is super soft and cuddly, so kids love wearing them. All of the different SleepSacks are available in micro-fleece and you can check out the adorable designs on the HALO web site:
