NatGeo Kids Ultimate Bugopedia & Anteater Bug Vac (Giveaway)
Before I begin this post, I feel obligated to ask all of you to please look outside and tell me if you see any flying pigs. Because I’m about to talk about insects…in a good way, one that won’t involve me getting the heebie jeebies. Okay, I might still get the heebie jeebies, but it’s for a good cause, I promise: it’s an excellent opportunity to make learning about insects fun for your children!
National Geographic Kids has an awesome new book called Ultimate Bugopedia, and we are just loving it here at my house. Well…my kids love it, and I love seeing them happy and having fun while they learn, so it’s definitely a win! And I’ll admit, learning more about insects has the added benefit of making me a little less squeamish about them. But just a little. 🙂
The Ultimate Bugopedia is a big, colorful book, jam-packed with facts and over 400 amazing images of insects from all across the world, written by the experts at National Geographic. The book is compiled for children aged 7-10, but my 4 year old is having lots of fun with it, so it definitely works for children outside that range.
The book profiles everything from beetles to ants to caterpillars to grasshoppers, and any other insect you can think of. Each bug profile has a list of fun facts that tell the scientific name, size, diet, and habitat of each insect.
My favorite thing about this book? The coordinating anteater-shaped bug vac! How cool is that?
The Wild Anteater Bug Vac allows your child to collect and identify insects, and then safely release them back into nature. I love that my kids can learn and study insects without actually harming them or permanently removing them from their natural habitat. It’s such a great tool to not only learn about insects, but to teach the importance of protecting nature and all its inhabitants.
As I mentioned, the Ultimate Bugopedia was written by the experts at National Geographic, and it was also selected as a 2014 Outstanding Science Trade Book for Students K-12 by the National Science Teachers Association and the Children’s Book Council. You can rest assured you’re getting a quality book you can be proud to add to your home library. I can already tell that my children will be going back to this book again and again as they discover new bugs in the future. In fact, I think we might just take it on vacation to Florida later this year, so the kids might spend a little time learning about bugs we don’t have in the northeast.
I highly recommend this book to anyone with children, even if they’re not yet particularly interested in science or insects. This book has a way of getting their attention either way!
