Monster Jam: Action-Packed Fun for All Ages
My family and I attended our very first Monster Jam last weekend! I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect from the event, but I knew my kids were very interested, so I was in. We bundled ourselves up, drove over to the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ, and watched what turned out to be a spectacular show.
To my surprise, Monster Jam was made up of several different events, including timed truck racing, a two-wheel skills challenge, donuts, and freestyle, plus atv and speedster racing. The whole thing took about two hours and fifteen minutes, and nearly every minute was packed with something exciting.
The trucks, of course, are massive, and most of them have as much personality as they do sheer size. Trucks like El Toro Loco, Zombie, and Pirate’s Curse add a little extra pizzazz to the event and really encourage audience interaction. My kids went nuts every time the Zombie truck came out and the audience did zombie arms!
The drivers/athletes are pretty impressive too. Not only can they do amazing tricks with those enormous trucks of theirs, but they are also the ones who do the atv and speedster races. And two of the Monster Jam athletes at our show were women. Who knew?
Oh, and you have an important role in Monster Jam too. During the two-wheel, donuts, and freestyle competitions, you get to vote for the winner! After each driver completes his/her turn, you have 20 seconds to visit a website and score their performance. Before the festivities begin, the announcers walk you through the process so you’re ready to go when it’s time to vote. This is totally optional, so if you’d prefer to sit back, relax, and watch, you certainly can. Personally, I found that having a chance to influence the outcome of the competition increased the thrill of it all.
You might already know this about Monster Jam, but just in case, I advise you to wear ear protection. Some parts of the show can be VERY loud, and you’re going to want to protect both little ears and your own. Our ear plugs helped mute the sounds of the engines while still allowing us to hear the announcers.
My son is obsessed with cars and trucks, so it wasn’t any big shock that he loved Monster Jam, but it was actually my daughter who was the first to ask when we could go again. What was even more surprising was how much fun I had. I’d never seen a truck do the moonwalk before! There was so much energy, and I couldn’t get enough of the racing and the tricks. Monster Jam is action-packed fun for kids and adults, and I’m looking forward to doing it again.
