You already know how difficult it can be to juggle all the things life throws at you on a daily basis. Taking care of the kids, housework, work work, doctor’s appointments, soccer games, birthday parties, dinner with the family…I could go on, but you know how it is.
Sometimes the idea of cooking a meal is just so daunting, isn’t it? I don’t want to sacrifice good ingredients and healthy food just to speed things up or make a quick meal. Products that meet all those requirements can be few and far between, but Modern Table has delicious kits that make dinner a breeze, and a healthy one at that.
Modern Table is a line of healthy, tasty, and speedy meal kits featuring bean-based pasta. All their kits are non-GMO, free of artificial colors and preservatives, and with the exception of one flavor, they’re also gluten free. I don’t know about you, but this is exactly what I need for busy school nights. Since school started up, we’ve been eating a lot of their kits, and they’ve all been big successes.
The Homestyle Mac & Cheese has a bean rotini pasta base (that means lentil-based flours), carrots, peas, and a creamy white cheddar sauce. I added some no-sugar-added turkey bacon, and the kids ate it right up. They didn’t even realize it wasn’t their “normal” mac and cheese, and I love being able to sneak some lentils into their diets!
The Mediterranean meal also has a bean-based lentil rotini along with leeks, red bell peppers, a garlic herb sauce, and Mediterranean citrus seasoning. I added chicken breast to this one, and it was perfect.
The nice thing about the seasoning packet being separate is that I can adjust how much seasoning each person gets. It’s a great way to make sure my own dish is swimming in flavor while preventing the kids from getting overwhelmed with too much seasoning.
We added a little parmesan cheese to that one, and it was amazing. My favorite Modern Table Meal Kit, however, is the Southwest. It’s so flavorful and fun to eat–especially topped with some shredded cheddar cheese. I’m making myself hungry just thinking about it.
I find myself giving the kids pasta quite often. It’s easy and they love it, but it’s not always the healthiest choice. With Modern Table, I have the perfect alternative to “regular” pasta, and the kids can’t even tell that there is a difference. Anything I can do to incorporate healthier components in my meals, I’m game. They’re great to serve as-is because each kit is complete with protein, vegetables, fiber, and vitamins, but it’s super easy to go above and beyond by adding extra protein or veggies. The back of the packages give you delicious ideas for that.
If I had to talk about one thing I don’t love, it’s the sugar in some of their sauces. I try so hard to keep the kids’ sugar consumption low, and it’s hard to do when it’s lurking in just about everything you find. I just wanted to make a note of that, in case sugar is a big deal in your house.
