My Little Pony: Equestria Girls Series Debuts on YouTube Today!
Today, I’m going to share with you something that I had in my childhood that my kids also have in theirs: My Little Pony! If you grew up in the ’80s, you’ll probably have memories of your favorite Pony, hours lying in front of the television watching the show, and the happy times spent brushing their tails with that tiny little comb. At least that’s what I remember.
And while the world went decades with no My Little Pony on the television, the series was rebooted in 2010 with My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. This new version kept the spirit of the original show at heart but totally updated the ponies and their world to something more modern. My own children have been big fans of Friendship is Magic, and when I told them that the MLP universe was expanding, they couldn’t have been more excited. Let me introduce you to a brand new series–My Little Pony: Equestria Girls.
In Equestria Girls, you’ll find all the ponies you know and love, like Twilight Sparkle, Applejack, Rainbow Dash, and the rest of the gang. This series will be even more modern, as it takes the ponies into a big adventure called high school. Kids will get to navigate the challenges of friendship and final exams while the ponies enjoy after-school clubs, beach visits, music festivals, theme parks, and more.
This show is different from its predecessors in one other way: it’s going to be a digital series, and it debuts on YouTube today. Check out the trailer here to see just how awesome it’s going to be:
There will be 45 episodes in all, with a new one being released every Friday. Each episode is between 2 and 3 minutes, so if you miss a few, it will be easy to catch up.
The Equestria Girls themselves have been featured before in movies and shorts, but this is the first time they’ll have their very own series. The original cast members are reprising their roles, so don’t fear any major character changes. Keep in mind, however, that these characters are teens, so the subject matter is a bit more mature than other versions of MLP. Most of the material is harmless, like babysitting, but they also touch on subjects like dating, so if your kids are younger, you might want to preview some episodes yourself first. At under 3 minutes a pop, it’s easy enough to do.
Will younger kids still enjoy it? While I think this series is partly an effort to keep their maturing audience engaged, I absolutely believe it will appeal to MLP fans of all ages. The girls are as quirky and vibrant as ever, and even if your kids can’t quite relate to every detail, they’ll be charmed by the color and humor that the characters impart. Also, friendship is still the central theme of these stories, and there are lessons here that everyone can benefit from learning.
Oh, and you might have already guessed, but Hasbro is also releasing a brand new line of My Little Pony: Equestria Girls dolls. The dolls will have an updated look and a focus on fashion, featuring brand new, trendy outfits. Equestria Girls fashion dolls will be available in the U.S. in December 2017, and available worldwide in January 2018.
After being treated to a sneak peek of the first several episodes of the show, I can tell you that my kids and I are really looking forward to more. Ready to see it for yourself? You can watch episode 1 of Equestria Girls on YouTube now, and be sure to follow Hasbro’s MLPEG Series Playlist so you don’t miss an episode. Fridays are going to be so fun!
