Kyocera Hydro Air: Waterproof, Drop-Proof, Dust-Proof AND Affordable!
Raise your hand if you’re clumsy?
Here I sit, both hands in the air, waving a banner that says “World’s Biggest Klutz” for good measure. Seriously, if it can be tripped over (including my own feet and imaginary carpet monsters), I’ll trip. If it can be spilled, you can safely bet I will spill it–especially if it’s red wine or spaghetti sauce. And of course, if it can be dropped, I’ll drop it, particularly if it’s a phone and there’s any type of water source nearby. It’s a sickness.
It should go without saying that I’ve worked my way through a long list of phones over the years. Sure, I’ve tried out the fancy “put me in the bottom of a lake while simultaneously running over me with a monster truck cases,” and while some of them live up to their claims, they’re just plain ugly. And I really dislike ugly phone cases; can’t they come up with something that’s both functional and cute? But I digress.
I’ve come to the conclusion that phone makers should be more in control of phone protection, really, and I’m excited to tell you about a new phone by Kyocera that does just that. The Kyocera Hydro AIR, a 4G LTE Android smartphone, is awesome, guys.
The Hydro Air is the latest in Kyocera’s lineup, and it’s available exclusively at Walmart for AT&T’s GoPhone prepaid mobile serivce. That means no contracts, and at just $99, this phone is the perfect choice for anyone who wants a no-strings-attached, high quality, high functioning smartphone.
First of all, this phone meets Military Standard 810G certification for shocks and drops, which means this phone can slip out of your hands and not give you an instant heart attack. The bright and gorgeous 5″ screen is impact resistant, too. I just wanted to tell you those things first, because that’s my worst problem with phones: constant droppage.
Now, onto the big feature. The Hydro AIR has a waterproof design, certified for IP57, which offers protection against dust and water immersion for up to 30 minute in up to 3.28 feet (1 meter) of water. Holy moly! This is where I tell you that my biggest phone fear is dropping it in the toilet. I constantly stick my phone in my back pocket around the house and forget about it. Do you know how easy it is for that phone to slide out of your pocket into the toilet? I’m betting you do. And even though it would be totally disgusting and require a serious sanitation consideration, at least I know that this phone will still work in a worst-case-toilet-scenario. Also, if I am using my phone for music while washing the dishes, for reading in the tub, or for taking pool pics with my kids, I’ll have the peace of mind that only comes with a waterproof phone. Awesome!
Additional specs: the Hydro AIR comes pre-loaded with all of Google’s mobile goodies, including Google Play, Google Hangouts, Gmail, and more. It has a 5MP camera, stereo Bluetooth, a memory card slot for up to 32 GB of extra storage, and a long-lasting 2300mAh Lithium ion batter bolstered by enhanced power-management software.

Wow! I wish my phone was waterproof. I fear taking it into the restroom for fear of getting it wet.

Wow. A waterproof phone! That would be really cool to not have to worry about damaging our phone if and when we have an “accident.” This would also be an awesome device for our elderly.

My friend lost her phone to a wave at the beach. Waterproof makes sense.
I am totally looking into one of these for my husband’s birthday. He is SO hard on his phone and we haven’t found anything that lasted and that he liked. Thanks for sharing.

Love that it is drop proof! I drop my phone all the time, so I have to have a heavy duty case so it doesn’t shatter.

Looks like a great product. Unfortunately, I’m trapped in a contract for another six months.
I laughed so hard when I read this. I too am a klutz. One evening I got a bowl of chili and was carrying into the living area. I tripped over my foot and the chili flew everywhere. There are still some splatter stains that I can’t get off of the ceiling.
Whoa!! Great price for something so resilient!! Finally a phone that can handle life as a cell phone without a gigantic case!!
I would love to have this phone. I really like that it is waterproof
It is amazing that it is waterproof. I know several people who have had ruined phones. I wonder if it works with snow too? friend ruined his by dropping it in the snow next to his car! This is a sharp looking phone too!
