It’s International Waffle Day. Let’s Celebrate with a Van’s Giveaway!
Thank you to Van’s for providing samples for our review and for a giveaway prize. All opinions contained in this post are my own.
As we wrap up Frozen Foods Month, we inch closer to what might now be my favorite “holiday” – International Waffle Day. That’s right. International Waffle Day is March 25, my friends. Celebrate with me.
I’ve mentioned busy mornings more than once recently, because I know most weekday mornings are a rush and a blur for many families. I’m a waffle lover, but I just don’t have the gumption to make a homemade waffle at 6:30 in the morning. I salute those of you who do. Instead, I’ll be munching on frozen waffles.
I’m sure you’ve noticed the frozen waffle variety has grown a lot in the past few years. New flavors, new styles, new shapes, you name it. And with that change, you’ve likely noticed a selection of “whole grain” and “organic” waffles among the traditional offerings. Have you tried them? They are not created equally.
For your next trip to the grocery store, let me make things a little easier for you: bypass all the other brands and head straight to the Van’s section. Why? Van’s has an amazing line of waffles that are great for you and absolutely trump their competitors in nutritional content. Just a side note: I love that Van’s offers a food traditionally loved by kids, and makes it even better by providing real nutritional value. Those busy mornings no longer mean sacrificing good food for your children. They will enjoy their waffles as usual, while you enjoy knowing they’re eating better ingredients.
I tried out Van’s Organic Blueberry Waffles and Whole Grains Lite Waffles to see how they stacked up against the rest. Get it? Stacked up? Do pancake jokes work with waffles? I digress.
Let’s look at the blueberry waffles, because Van’s knocks these out of the park. Instead of the enriched flour and processed sugar of competing brands, Van’s uses organic whole wheat flour and organic unbleached flour, as well as organic cane sugar. We all know the benefits of organic versus non-organic, but let’s talk specifically about this flour situation. The enriched flour you get in many foods loses a lot of nutritional value. Whole wheat flour has more protein, more fiber, more potassium, more vitamin A and vitamin B6, just to name a few. When I have a choice between the two, I definitely go for what is better for me and my family.
Van’s Whole Grains Lite Waffles stack up equally well. These are a lighter offering for anyone who wants to cut calories. They also use whole wheat flour instead of enriched flour, but they don’t stop there. These actually have a Van’s 8 Whole Grains Mix, which includes whole wheat, oat, barley, brown rice, dark rye, quinoa, and amaranth and millet flours. Wow. Even competitors’ whole wheat waffles don’t come close to touching that. If you look at the labels, you’ll see enriched flour right at the top of the ingredients list, second only to water.
I think the choice is pretty clear if you’re looking for waffles with better, healthier ingredients: Van’s is the way to go! To check out the full line of Van’s delicious waffles, have a look at their website. There are plenty of gluten-free offerings, by the way!
