Inspirational Heroes & Heroines from National Geographic Kids + Giveaway
Superhero movies are all the rage right now, which is totally fine by me. I love them, my kids love them, and it’s also opened up several opportunities to talk about real-life heroes and heroines. Because my kids have already developed such a love for superheroes, it’s been no problem at all translating that into true stories of people who are doing (and have done) good in the world.
All our hero talks have made my kids even more excited to read two new books by National Geographic Kids: The Book of Heroes and The Book of Heroines.
Like all Nat Geo Kids books, these keep kids active, engaged, and happy to learn; you might not know, but Nat Geo actually publishes over 100 titles every year, many focused on STEM topics. They all have bold colorful graphics and photographs, and they’re totally packed with fun, engrossing content.
The Book of Heroines: Tales of History’s Gutsiest Gals shares true stories of war heroes, world leaders, superstars, and everyday women who have made a difference and changed the world. To name a few of the amazing women profiled: Sacagawea, Mother Teresa, Malala Yousafzai, and Emma Watson.
The Book of Heroes: Tales of History’s Most Daring Guys looks at the men who have made the world a better place. This one includes people like Galileo, Abraham Lincoln, Stephen Hawking, and Michael Jordan.
Both books feature more than 100 profiles of real-life role models, including facts and photos. They also cover people from all eras, historic to modern.
I love both of these books, and so do my kids. Both of them highlight many of the qualities that make someone a role model or hero, and while there are many, there are seven qualities attributed to every person profiled:
- They’re courageous
- They do the right thing
- They have compassion
- They are competent
- They are inspiring
- They never quit
- They leap to action
My kids are soaking in this new knowledge, and they’re going into the world each day knowing how to stand up for what’s right and make a difference. We all know that’s not always easy for kids, especially when doing the right thing is also the hardest thing. By reading about the courage and strength of these heroines and heroes, they have real inspiration at their fingertips, and that makes me very happy. Do you think it’s important for kids to have role models?
These books would make excellent Christmas gifts for children ages 8-12, and they’re a great deal at just $14.99 each. You can buy Heroes and Heroines now on Amazon.com.
You can enter to win both books right now. Just complete one or more of the tasks in the Giveaway Tools form below, and make sure you come back for the daily entries. Open to US residents who are 18 and older. Ends 12/4/16 at 11:59 PM ET. Good luck!

I think having role models is important as long as they are good role models.
I think it’s VERY important that kids have role models!! I do think there is too much emphasis on celebrities as being role models which I don’t want to see. Not that they are all bad and don’t do good in the world, but Id prefer my son have a role model that makes difference in the world and makes the world a better place!
I think celebrities can be good role models, but there shouldn’t be such an huge importance place on it.

I think role models are good for kids – in general – but not celebrities famous for physical appearances or sports stars who excel at only one thing.
I think that role models are great for kids, especially when they are positive role models who can teach children good things!
Role models are very necessary for kids. However, I do not believe celebrities are the proper role models, nor politicians, and other media related persons. I think role models need to be wholesome individuals free of scandal, lies, and of course corruption. Moral upright individuals and parents are the best role models, I think.
I think it is important for kids to have role models but for sure not a stupid celebrity. They cannot even keep their names out of the headlines because of all the bad choices that they make in their lives. And they should never marry! None of their marriage ever last long enough to even celebrate about. I guess money cannot buy you everything!
