Healthier Road Trip Snacks for the Whole Family
Road trip season is here! My favorite part of summer is vacation, often in the form of a road trip. Sometimes we go upwards of 1,000 miles, and other times we take shorter day or weekend trips. Either way, keeping the kids fed and entertained is crucial to a peaceful road trip with the whole family. With that in mind, I’ve compiled a list of my absolute favorite road trip snacks that are convenient, non-gmo, and good for the whole family. Since I like to keep a mix of both savory and sweet snacks on hand in the car, I’m sharing some of both!
I’m sure you’ve seen KIND snacks at your local grocery stores, but you may not have tried their newest flavors (Black Truffle Almond & Sea Salt, Dark Chocolate Almond & Coconut, Dark Chocolate Almond Mint, Raspberry Cashew & Chia, and Honey Roasted Nuts & Sea Salt). KIND snack bars are some of my favorite things; I’m a huge fan of the Nuts & Spices bars, as well as the STRONG bars. The thing about a lot of snack bars is that they’re very sweet, and I dislike that (you know we love to cut out as much sugar as possible). The Nuts & Spices bars only have 5g of sugar and come in delicious flavors that nicely blend savory and sweet. The STRONG bars are packed with 10g of protein, and their Healthy Grains bars are loaded full of things like amaranth and millet. My kids fight over the Popped Salted Caramel bar in particular.
Snacks made by Element include delicious dessert snacks that are perfect for on-the-go. ELEMENT snack rice cakes are available in dark chocolate (contains no animal products or byproducts), milk chocolate, strawberry yogurt, and vanilla orange. All of ELEMENT’s snacks are GMO-free, gluten free, yeast free, cholesterol free, and BPA free. They use no preservatives, no artificial flavors, no corn syrup, no trans-fats, and no milk hormones. In other words, these dessert snacks are both delicious and guilt-free!
GimMe Health Organic Seaweed Chips
GimMe snacks are super yummy savory seaweed chips that are great for a road trip snack. Now, I know some of you might be put off by the idea of seaweed, so bear with me. These chips really are delicious, and don’t have an overwhelming flavor of seaweed that you may have found in other snacks before. To test their strength as a road trip food, I let my kids have some of these without telling them they were seaweed-based. They thought they were just eating some sea salt chips and loved them. That’s proof enough for me! These come in flavors of Sea Salt, Teriyaki, Wasabi, and Sriracha (my favorite).
Plentils are chips with benefits! Lentils are one of the best sources of plant-based protein, and they’re a staple in diets all around the world. It was only a matter of time before someone made a great-tasting, all-natural snack using the goodness of the lentil. These Plentils are filled with protein, are extra crunchy, and are incredibly flavorful. They come in several flavors, including Sea Salt, Dill & Sour Cream, Margherita Pizza, Garlic & Parmesan, and Himalayan Pink Salt. All flavors are free of milk, gluten, soy, and nuts.
Ella’s pouches are my favorite way to make sure my kids can get their full servings of fruit on the go, and I actually enjoy eating them myself. They taste great, and they aren’t loaded with bad-for-you ingredients like some fruit pouches (these are made with organic fruits and nothing else). The flavor combinations are really fun and come in Green, Purple, Yellow, and Red varieties. When we went to the beach last year, we usually packed a cooler and spent the entire day at the water. These pouches were a staple for us, and were great as an after-lunch “dessert” or a sweet snack in the afternoon when we started to lag a little bit.
So, did you see anything you like? These are our tried-and-true road trip snacks, and I think they would be a hit on your next journey too. Let us know if you’ve tried them, and if you have your own go-to travel snacks, please share them with us!

I’ve gotten them at Whole Foods and/or Wegmans, but I really get most of it from Vitacost.com.
I’ve tried lentil chips before but never that brand. I’ll have to see if I can find them in my store.
