Guide to Mosaic Tile
If you are considering a tiling project in your home, you may be overwhelmed by the number of options available. Not only do tiles come in just about any color or shape imaginable, they are also available in a number of different materials. One tile product that has become very popular is mosaic tile. This type of tile is known for the elaborate designs and patterns that they can create. Before selecting a tile for your home improvement project, there are many things you need to know about mosaic tile to see if it could work for you.
What Is Mosaic Tile?
Stone tiles for kitchen and bathroom backsplashes come in sheets that are made out of many small tiles. These small tiles are usually no bigger than 2 inches. Each sheet can be cut into smaller sizes or into strips for use as a border. The shape of the tile can be square, rectangular, round, or irregular.
What Are The Different Types Of Mosaic Tile Materials?
There are a variety of materials that mosaic tile can be made out of. The most popular options include:
- Glass
- Stone
- Ceramic
- Porcelain
- Stainless steel
Choosing the correct material for you project largely depends upon where the tile will be installed and your personal tastes and preferences. Stone tends to have a more natural, rustic appearance whereas glass has a more eye catching, contemporary appeal. Ceramic and porcelain tile are available in just about any color to add a bright pop of color or to blend in seamlessly. Stainless steel tile, on the other hand, can make a space feel clean and modern. Furthermore, each material has its own advantages and disadvantages that must be taken into consideration when planning a project.
Where Can They Be Used?
Mosaic tile is a very versatile product. It can be used in a number of different areas with great results. Some of the most popular uses include:
- Kitchen backsplash
- Shower and tub surrounds
- Swimming pools
- Floors
- Walls/ murals
- Home furniture and accents
Mosaic tile can be used on just about any smooth, sound surface. This is one reason it has become such a popular product for so many home projects.
Is Mosaic Tile Difficult To Install?
Mosaic tile is no more difficult to install than any other type of tile. In fact, in many cases, it may actually be a little easier. Because it comes in sheets, it can be installed in larger sections quite quickly. The netting that holds the tile together will actually stretch and compress a little to effectively fit into difficult spaces. The end result can be beautiful and complex with less work than most people realize. One of the biggest advantages of mosaic tile is that you can achieve the visual impact of lots of little tiles without having to set each individual tile.
With so many uses and advantages, why not consider mosaic tile for your next home tiling project? Available in a seemingly endless variety of colors, shapes, and materials, the most difficult decision you may have to make is which tile to use. With its unsurpassed beauty and versatility, mosaic tile can be a great choice for your home!

Great post! I love all the variations in tiles available, I tried my hand at tiling in our kitchen a few years ago. We did a complete remodel and I figured why not, I love how it came out and it was easy really! We couldn’t spend the money for the soap stone counter top that I really wanted, so I found a 12×12 sq., tile that looked as close as possible, dark grout and it came out excellent, well I love it. It was so inexpensive compared to a slab counter top.
